Rastas Still Have Beef With Snoop Lion, Says He Breached Contract

Snoop Lion Rastafarian photo
Just when you thought that the Rastafarian community was warming up to Snoop Lion, things took a turn for the worse.
Reggae legend Bunny Wailer and the Rastafarian Millennium Council are again attacking the West Coast rap legend turn reggae star for what they called profiting off their culture.
See also: Snoop Lion, Mavado Headline LionFest At SXSW
The latest attack came just days after Snoop Lion premiered his long awaited documentary film, Reincarnated, in select theaters across the U.S.
Bunny Wailer, who is Snoop’s biggest critic, says the rapper should not have included video footage in the documentary showing their first meeting together.
General secretary of the Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council, Robert ‘Prophet Greg’ Mogg, also accused Snoop Lion of breaching contractual agreements signed in February of last year.
“The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September last year,” Mogg told the Jamaica Observer. “He has now gone into merchandising… another breach. “This is a violation of our intellectual property and we have to safeguard our culture.”
It would appears the Rastafarians plight maybe getting to Snoop, who says he may never do another reggae album, at least not in Jamaica.
“I definitely feel like I’m gonna make more music but I don’t know if I’m gonna go to Jamaica, I may wanna go somewhere else,” Snoop Lion told NME. “I may wanna venture into another part of the world. Some things you let them be what they are. That was a priceless moment. I may wanna do something different next time. I’m just saying I don’t know if I want to repeat the same process as far as going to Jamaica and making a reggae album. I may wanna go to another country and make a reggae album.”
Snoop Lion and dancehall star Mavado performed last weekend at the SXSW festival.

Britain, US not welcome to observe Zimbabwe elections - Zanu PF

HARARE - The party led by President Mugabe Zanu PF says Britain, the United States of America and their western allies which imposed illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe will not be invited to observe the forthcoming elections.
"Zimbabwe will not allow countries that imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe to participate as observers," at the election -- slated for July -- Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi was quoted by local radio as saying.

His comment would rule out the participation of European, US or other western observers in monitoring the crucial poll, amid ominous signs of political violence ahead of the vote.
Mumbengegwi instead called for sanctions to be removed "unconditionally and in their totality," according to Spot FM.

The European Union last month eased sanctions against Zimbabwe, but the United States has said it will only end restrictions after more reforms.
Mumbengegwi's comments represent a snap reaction to Swedish international development minister, Gunilla Carlsson, who during a visit to Harare on Monday called for monitors to be admitted.
"We think it is a very good idea to have international observers," she said after meeting Mumbengegwi and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

"It's helpful for outcome of the elections to know that there has been international group standards."
The elections are part of a complex roadmap to put the country back on a stable footing after a series of votes marred by violence, intimidation and economic hardship.

On March 16 Zimbabweans will vote on a new constitution which is expected to underpin fairer elections.
But already a series of arrests and deaths have raised questions about whether supporters of President Robert Mugabe will chose the baton or the ballot box.

Radio stations have been raided, members of non-governmental groups have arrested and the son of an opposition leader has died in a suspected firebomb attack.

Zimbabwe police have found foul play was not involved in a house fire that killed the 12-year-old.
Mugabe, who turned 89 on February 21 has ruled the southern African nation since independence in 1980.

INTERVIEW: Queen Ifrica

Queen Ifrica is a rebellious daughter
Queen Ifrica defied her mother and became a rasta. Today she is one of the leading conscious reggae artists with two albums and several hit singles on her list of merits. United Reggae has met her.

Queen Ifrica has music in her veins. She’s the daughter of ska and rock steady veteran Derrick Morgan. She begun singing as a child and was discovered in the mid 90’s by singer and producer Tony Rebel.

Since then she has released two albums – 'Fyah Muma' in 2007 and 'Montego Bay' in 2009 – and has also contributed to several riddim compilations. Her latest hit song is Times Like These, on the City Life riddim, she pleads for the need of more heroes and sings about Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley among others.

Queen Ifrica is a conscious artist. She also a real rasta.

“I am 100 percent rasta,” she says when we meet backstage about two hours after her set at Uppsala Reggae Festival, and continues:

“Rasta is who I am. It’s the blood that runs through these little arms.”

She’s a petite singer with a huge voice, and can easily switch from straight singing to a gruff Buju Banton style. When we meet she seems relaxed and laughs a lot.

The invisible visible

According to Queen Ifrica female energy is important within the rasta community, but it seems tough for women to be heard since it’s a conservative religion. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any women. Quite the opposite.

“There are 1,000’s of rasta women in Jamaica. They’re the invisible visible. You don’t see them as you see other women,” she explains.

Defied her mother

It turns out that Queen Ifrica’s mother is one of these rasta women, but she didn’t want her daughter to travel the same path as her.

“My mother is one of them. She’s living deep up in the hills. But she didn’t want me to grow locks. She thought that I wasn’t disciplined enough,” she laughs, and continues:

“But she saw herself in me and understands me and she is the proudest mommy right now. She’s an angel. She’s a queen, she’s seen as the queen mother in her village.”

Queen Ifrica’s mother is an outspoken person, and the daughter describes the mother as rebellious.

“She’s rebellious for the right reasons and she’s an independent woman. She wants to be equal to men. Aside from being a woman you are also an individual,” she says, and continues:

“It’s fun to see her argue with men. Women don’t usually have an opinion. Women are seen but not heard in rasta. It’s fun to watch her,” she laughs.

Stick to positive music
Being a role model is part of being an artist and as a young artist you need to understand what it means to be a role model. Queen Ifrica says you have a responsibility.

“Reggae hails from the poor and poverty. It’s a music that will spark a certain type of reaction. You need to encourage the youths,” she explains, and continues:

“Stick to positive cultural music, and I know that young people can love it."

Damian Junior Gong Marley is bringing reggae and hip hop

Juniour Gong Marley

When triple-Grammy Award winning artist Damian Marley performs in Cayman, he’s bringing a deep musical knowledge with him.

His rootsy sensibility is evident on tracks like Affairs of the Heart and yet the Jamaican musician is equally adept at melding hip hop, rock and sampling technology together – his collaborations with Skrillex and Nas speak loudly to a very modern musical mind. Welcome to Jamrock, possibly the first contact many fans had with his material, which could hardly be described as classic reggae.

The event, which takes place at the Festival Green, Camana Bay on Friday, 1 March, is organised by YoungBlood Productions. Mr. Notch of YoungBlood rates Marley’s work exceptionally highly. He explained that bringing the musician to Cayman was originally inspired by Black History Month.

“We have traditionally tried to set up shows [during February] to commemorate Black History Month. It is also the height of tourist season,” he muses.

“The idea is to give the locals and the tourists the chance to interact together. That is really important. A lot of the entertainment on island is segregated – a tourist venue and tourist entertainment, then elsewhere a local venue with local entertainment. But this gig is bringing local entertainment with an international flair to a central venue that is good for both.”

Damian Marley’s success as an artist made it an easy decision for the promoters to bring him here.

“It was a simple selection. Damian is moving reggae music in a direction that merges with hip hop and it is starting now to become a more mainstream type of form. Roots used to be mainstream and now this is the future.

“I am a music lover so I like it. One thing about music is the lyrics and his appeal to the younger generation. He is really speaking to them. I think he is the Bob Marley of his generation and it is ironic that he is the only one of the children to have Robert Nesta in his name,” comments Notch.

Cutting edge

In store for crowds is a real high-energy treat, says the musician and promoter.

“Damian Marley is one of the most cutting-edge performers for the new generation and, like his dad [Bob Marley], brought reggae to the world, Damian is bringing new style reggae to his own generation,” Notch notes.

Also performing is an impressive array of local talent, including LocalMotion 345, Notch’s band, as well as performances from Stuart Wilson – who is bringing his wonderful band over from Jamaica – and Rennie Connolly.

“They are the best musicians Cayman has to offer, you cannot get better and they will also back Rennie Connolly who is playing on the night. Rennie has a roots repertoire, for sure.

“Damian has the future, Rennie has the past and me and Stuart Wilson have everything in between.”

The concert will be a safe concert, with lots of security and a strong police presence in the Camana Bay area. There will be a ‘One Love’ vibe, says Notch.

“Nobody needs to fear coming here like they are going to be oppressed or that they are not going to be able to let their hair down. This is a YoungBlood-style concert.

“It is such a massive venue that bringing blankets and chairs is always a good idea. This is reggae music and a free vibe.”

Notch says he would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors and partners who have helped make the event happen.
